yee-haw!
Once I wished I was a cowgirl.
A swingin' cowgirl, with the spankin' cowboygirl hat.
So when we went to Windows of the World in China and I saw a cowboy hat, I decided to get one no matter what.
Turns out I didn't have to starve for it. Very affordable.
Imagine getting one for 15 RMB. That's around 100 pesos.
It's not a leather one, but it'll do.
I even got a pink parasol, eventhough I was pretty sure I won't be able to use it.
I paraded around in my new cowboy hat, not taking it off even when we were freezing sliding down man-made snow hills ( I don't even know what to call it) in the gigantic snow room, or going to the crazy rides. I loved loved loved my ♥hat♥.
Imagine my surprise when I saw maintenance people, cleaning up around the place, all wearing cowboy hats. The same ones as the one I got. I was afraid one of them would hand me a broom and yell at me to start sweeping.
I never heard the end of it from Mommy and Kate.
The humiliation! Oh, the terrible humiliation!
There goes my cowgirl dream out the window.

pesky people
I guess two annoying people are too much for me in one week.
The first one happens to be our opthalmologist. He talks to me like I'm a 3 year old kid, and he refers to Mommy as "Mama". Like, "O Kristel, come here o, look at Mama's eyes in here", and I get really annoyed because:
1. Like, duh, doc. Kristel is not even one of my aliases.
2. I prefer to call my mother "Mommy", thankyouverymuch.
Then he points to the poster on the wall showing the inner parts of the eye using his laser pointer. How cool is that? I felt like I was inside the classroom because he kept on asking me questions like:
1. "Diba Kristel you know what a cornea is?"
2. "What is the purpose of the lens again?"
3. "Remember what I mentioned earlier about your pupils?"
And when he was writing down the prescription, he kept on muttering things like:
1. "Okay, Kristel, remind Mama ha? Hot compress for her eyes".
2. "Mama, remind Kristel, cold compress naman for her eyes".
3. "Hot compress, cold compress, so easy to remember diba?"
I swear if you come up to him, one eye checkup will take 3 hours. And that's excluding the time he spends telling you about his relatives. Gah.
Then there's annoying person number 2.
She's actually just a classmate who was assigned to be my buddy for our community assessment in San Juan. She insisted that we meet up to finish our narrative, and I said we could do it in my house since it was near school.
And so we ageed to do it on a Tuesday. I would pick her up at school, 10am.
And she had to ruin my Tuesday morning by:
1. Not bringing her phone. I called her when she was already 20 minutes late, only to have her brother answer it, saying she's left the house a while ago.
2. Sending me text messages telling me to wait for her. The nerve, when she was already an hour late. I would have gone home if I didn't have anyone to talk to, good thing Jay (another classmate) showed up.
3. Being terribly late. I left at 11:30am because Mommy and I have an appointment with the lovely opthalmologist.
When I got home, she called and asked me to come pick her up, and I told her to get her arse down here because there's no way I was going back there (and besides we were headed to the doc, annoying person number 1).
And look what she did while I was away:
1. She went straight up to the third floor to suck up to my Dad, who was terribly busy then. She didn't even ask our maid if she could go. Daddy kept on sending text messages to Mommy and me, asking us to come home already because "this girl" kept on blabbing and that she was very odd and (drumroll, please...) annoying.
2. She kept on telling our maid: "Ate, masanay ka na sa 'kin, madadalas ako dito kasi partner ako ni Tella, marami kaming gagawin kaya malamang palagi niya kong papupuntahin dito". Sweetie, you are not going back here, I'm telling you.
Then when I got back, instead of getting straight to work, she begged me to create a Friendster account for her. Of course I had to make an email account too, since she didn't have one yet. And of course I had to take pictures of her using the webcam, because she was complaining that she didn't have a photo she could place in Friendster.
And I don't know if I'd be annoyed or feel sorry for her because:
1. She was flipping through our magazines, and she pointed to this one gorgeous model, saying: "Alam mo Tel, ganito din figure ko eh, hindi nga lang halata sa uniform natin". Oookay.
2. She absolutely adored my sister, and she kept asking me about Kate's preferences. Whenever I'd answer her question, she says: "Grabe, ako riiiiin! Parehong-pareho kami ng kapatid mo. Pakilala mo na kasi ako eh, magkakasundo kamiii!"
3. She kept on hugging me while I was typing, all the while saying: "Sana, Tel, maging bestfriend kita". Lordy.
Just yesterday I ran into her and she insisted that we meet up to do our narrative again together. I told her: "Email email na lang. Busy ako this week eh."
But ohmygod, I'll be seeing doc again tomorrow. Sheesh.

meet ME --- a walking catastrophe
Last Friday I was busy bustling around the house, but I was careful because it was raining so hard and I knew there were leaks in some areas and it was slippery. However, when Daddy called me, I forgot all about it and look what I got --- broken toes and scrapes in my right knee. Until now my feet hurt when I walk, and it's still somehow in shades of purple.
Then last Monday, Iwent to sleep took a nap in the afternoon and woke up for my evening class wondering why I can't open my left eye. I looked in the mirror and it was bloated (really really bloated), and I was hyperventilating at the thought of going blind.
Daddy said I looked like some Korean, so I posed like one nyahaha.
And that's all you're gonna see. No need to blow the picture up to laugh at me till we barf.
Because yeah, I look awful haha.
Mommy brought me to the opthalmologist and we found out it was just my eye allergy. I was advised to wear eyeglasses just for protection, and not really everytime.
I'm anticipating my next accident. Perhaps a broken spinal cord? Lordy, no... I would still like to see the day I'd bungee jump or skydive, thankyouverymuch.

the band in the birthday bash
Last Friday night my cousin's family threw a birthday bash for him, since it's his 21st and maybe it's some sort of a late celebration (because he didn't have one when he graduated) and probably because he's now working as a professor in UP who terrorizes students with Math. Happy Birthday Kuya Alex-who-didn't-wanna-say-who-his-girlfriend-is. Next time I'd pester you till you wanna yell at me like what you do to your poor students (hehe kidding).
Kate, Carla, and Cheena / Amy, Alou, and Kate
Kate, Mommy, and Me / AK, my inaanak --- isn't she the cutest? / Me and Kate
The band (read: Daddy and the gang) was there to play some new and old songs. My cousins requested new ones from Hale and Maroon 5 and the like, and it was funny seeing Daddy's band play it because they were all daddy-looking haha. But then again nothing beats seeing them play the blues and classic pinoy rock and roll --- Clapton, SRV, BB King, Maria Cafra, Juan dela Cruz.
Tito Lito and Papa Al / Daddy and Tito Joric / Tito Lito, Papa Al, and Daddy
We headed to Starbucks after to have a dose of caffeine before bedtime.
clockwise from top left: Ate Cossette and Mommy / Ate Tetch, Kuya Stephen, and Ate Cossette /
Ate Marge and Ate Tetch / Ate Cossette, Mommy, Daddy, and half of Kate's face hehe :-)
The night was good, because good music + yummy food = great night, baby, yeah...

rain reminds us of memories that make cold hearts warm
The title of this post was actually a text message I got from Mikko --- and I believe it's true. I've always been happier when it rains (though I abhor flooded streets and having my things get soaked). Ironically, I tend to study better when it's raining, and I'm definitely more productive.
But today I kinda missed the sunshine.

I don't want to sound like I don't care about this country's welfare, but I've lost my faith in our leaders and I think the current situation is hopeless. And until I see an honest politician, I will continue to believe that.
It's the sad truth I face almost everyday when I walk to school, seeing all those people participating in a rally in hopes of finding a solution to this country's problems. But then again, I can't help admiring them for being optimistic.
I could only hope I had as much faith in this country as they all do.

and the band is back
The band is back, though probably only for this one gig.
Daddy, Tito Joric, Tito Lito, and Tito Jingle (the main members of the Soul Benders) decided to meet up again to play for my cousin's birthday on Friday. I've been hearing live versions of my favorite blues songs the past few days, thanks to their practices.
They originally formed the band just for fun, since they were all true-blue musicians who had a common ground --- the blues. Tito Joric is also known as Delta Slim, already a veteran in the blues music scene and known for his vast collection of really old songs you can no longer get in any record store. Tito Lito (bass guitar) and Tito Jingle (drums) have been with Dad since God knows when, and sometimes they go here to just jam or talk about guitars or eat heehee.
A few years back they were asked to play in the Manila Blues Summit, and it was a hit. So the following year, they were included in the lineup for the Blues and Jazz Festival at Greenbelt. They've been invited to play at the Fète dela Musique (French Music Festival), but at that time Tito Joric was out of the country for his job. Since then they only played on special occasions or for friends, because they were all busy with their day jobs.
I guess I'm ecstatic to see them play again. I'm probably their greatest fan.
Oh, sorry Kate. That includes you, too. So we're the two greatest Soul Benders fans.

smoking is so overrated
So you smoke. Big bad deal.
I don't know how people get into their heads the fact that smoking is cool. On the other hand, I'm not saying it's uncool. The point is: So you smoke, period.
Most of my friends in UST smoke. Joy consumes 5 cigarettes in one sitting (that's her equivalent of a single stick). Meri, Charm, Tal, Fio (I could go on and on) have yosi breaks by the hour, sometimes even every twenty minutes especially when we were making orthographic projections or conceptualizing. And just to make it convenient, they bring their own packs everyday. Jim shows us different whatnots with the smoke, and I particularly liked the "o".
I probably got tired of seeing everyone smoke everyday --- mornings (to perk up a bit), yosi breaks in between, lunchtime (inhaling it together with tuna sandwiches and chocolate drinks at Coffee Indulgence), more yosi breaks, more cigarettes at Chino's store (he is, by the way, the godfather of I. delos Reyes nyahaha), then Touki or one of the guys will bring a whole carton of more cigarettes which will more or less keep them occupied till around 10pm. It got old real quick, and if I continue taking in all that smoke, my lungs and brain cells will melt away into millions of tiny molecules real quick too. No thank you.
I see young girls and boys smoke because they think it's cool.
Children! I shall not tolerate such behavior. Go memorize your lessons or sleep so you'll grow faster (the latter has in fact been affirmed by my Anatomy professor, sweeties).
And I don't know about that coolness factor. But I do know that if you continue puffing away with those sticks (flavored or not), there is an enormous risk of getting your right and left brain mashed together, and you'll be mentally-challenged before you even get to learn how to solve Algebraic equations. Or maybe there'll be punched-up holes in your lungs, and the holes will eat it up and one day you'll simply perish while smoking (yet again) outside your school campus.
Oh well. At least you followed school rules and regulations.
But if you should ever choose to disregard my warnings, please brush your teeth.

a night out with the girls
Thursday last week I had a night out with my cousins (and some of their friends) so we could at least get together with Ate Belbet before she left for China. It was supposed to be on a Friday, but she already had her going away party planned with her friends. So we had to settle for Thursday, without Ate Mayee (contract signing for her new place), Yen (lotsa things to do --- wow you're really a college student na) and Ate Jo (upcoming exams).
Most of them haven't tried out Don Henrico's yet so we decided to go there. I was glad to see Ate Jean after quite some time --- she's now a spankin' office girl who works for Maersk. Buchoy (or Choy or Rob) was there when we arrived, but left after eating since it was supposed to be a girls' night out. His girlfriend was there, and another cousin's ex-girlfriend --- Mitch, I think (gawd I'm beginning to have a headache).
It was okay, though nothing much happened. Oh and too bad we didn't have a picture with everyone in there because Ate Belbet, Buchoy's girlfriend, Mitch and Ate Noreen went outside to smoke, I think.
I want a night out with Ate Ron, Ate Ria, Reg, Ate Mayee, Yen, and Ate Jo. The whole gang. So terribly sad they weren't able to come. Of course the first three can't really make it since they're in Canada. Meh.
And to Ate Belbet: take care and have fun 'cause you're back in the land of and hot policemen and cheap dvds and nice massages and cute Chinese boys and endless incredible shopping. Maybe we can go back there this year muahaha. Or maybe not.

♥ 20 years and a lifetime to go ♥
Last week my parents celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. We had a little dinner up in our rooftop with a few close friends from church.
They got married when Daddy was 20 and Mommy was 21. I was born June and their wedding was August. Since then they've provided us with everything we could ever need, with lots of laughter along the way. There's so much love in this family it's hard not to stay happy. And it doesn't hurt either to see your parents together for that long and see them still so in love :-)
Until now they still go on dates --- that means we, the kids (yeah yeah not exactly) would stay home or go off and have our own date (Me, Kate, and Imman). We're not complaining as long as we get to go out too haha.
Happy Anniversary to my parents and I love you both very much ♥ ♥ ♥
